I hate spyware, and spyware hates me. I hate it because I have spent so many years cleaning it from peoples' computers. It hates me because I don't quit until I get every last little piece it out of there. I despise it and the people who create it. Oh, and you know what's really odd? I have never had to clean it from my own computers... just the computers of people I know, and friends and family
So you might ask why I have spent so much time cleaning spyware from computers? Well, it's like this. I used to work in the Tech department of a local hospital. The people who worked at the hospital were good at hospital stuff, but they were terrible when it came to computers. I don't blame them for it. It was just a fact of life.
But what would happen is that they would get bored with their jobs and start surfing around the web and they would end up downloading anything and everything they could find, like Weatherbug, Bonzai Buddy, and a whole bunch of other crap that they thought was cute and fun to use. Trouble is, they had no idea that they were loading their computers up with Adware and Spyware.
So that's where I came in. I would get a call at my desk and they would tell me about how slow their computer was and how they were getting inundated with pop up ads. It was the same story over and over, but with different users and computers.
So I would spend hours sitting there, cleaning spyware from their computers, only to have to do it again for someone else a few days later.
Now, keep in mind that this was a few years ago, before many of the awesome tools that we have now were available for cleaning and removing spyware and adware.
Fast forward a couple of years and now I have my own computer service company. I get to clean more spyware from computers, only on a much larger scale! Now I have people bringing their computers to me on a daily basis, telling me about how they don't know why their computer is so slow and why they keep getting these terrible pop up ads with really bad stuff in them. My favorite response was always; "Do you have teenage kids at home"? And their answer was always "yes".
So I would slave away for hours, cleaning this nasty spyware from their computers, one little piece at a time.
I grew to hate Spyware with a passion. I reached the point where I not only hated it, I despised it. And I still do.
Fortunately, some really great tools have been developed in the last two years or so, for uprooting Spyware and Adware from computers.
My favorite tool is Spyware Doctor. Spyware Doctor is the most thorough tool I have ever seen. It gets in there and roots this stuff out and destroys it.. completely. It leaves no traces of it behind. And then, it keeps protecting your computer after the fact. Oh, and Spyware Doctor will scan your computer for you, completely free. If it finds spyware and/or adware, you simply pay a very small one-time charge to purchase the full version of Spyware Doctor, and it will sanitize your computer for you.
Now, as with taking care of yourself, taking care of your computer is kind of the same... an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Do yourself a really big favor and be very careful about what you download onto your computer. Stay away from most of the free software out there. It's rarely ever really free. You may get a beautiful free screensaver, but you also get adware with it, which means you will get pop up windows and other unwanted behavior, such as poor system performance. Once that happens you end paying someone to remove it from your computer. See what I mean about nothing really being free?
So if you're having trouble with your computer running slow or with pop up ads, put a stop to it right now before it gets worse and brings your computer to it's knees, gasping for breath.
